An early interest in painting was encouraged by my parents and I took 'A' Level Art at Stockport Grammar School. Despite some early success, I never expected to be able to pursue art as an occupation and in fact read Law at Bristol University, where I met my wife, Helen.
Thirty years in the legal profession followed, but we both kept up an interest in art and attended evening classes in Shirehampton, where we lived and brought up our four children.. Those classes eventually turned into and independent art club in which I was encouraged to undertake some teaching.

Life sketch, acrylic on paper, Queens Road School of Art & Design, Bristol, 1992.
At last I was able to leave my legal practice and prepare to be a full-time painter. As a first step, I entered the Queen's Road School of Art and Design in Bristol to study life painting on a part-time basis.
I had my first one-man show at the Yallup Gallery near Chepstow in May 1993. There followed a number of one-man and shared exhibitions in the West of England. These were very successful but eventually I decided to leave the displaying and selling of my work to selected galleries, and now I mostly display my work this way.
I am very glad to be able to continue teaching through my weekly art classes and occasional demonstration days in Norfolk, where we now live.
